Strand C, Session 1: A Continuous Improvement Cycle of Data-Driven PBS--Making It Work!
|
| Abstract: |
This session will present a cycle of continuous improvement in which a site-based leadership team involves the entire staff in data-driven decision-making tasks to design a behavior-based response-to-intervention structure in which no students fall through the cracks. Proactive behavioral intervention requires that the total staff of a school work together to meet the needs of all students. This session will create the context for the three-tier structure that follows in subsequent sessions. Participants will leave with data collection strategies that will allow them to identify strengths and weaknesses of current behavior support efforts. (11770)

Strand C, Session 2: Schoolwide Universal Prevention: Improving Safety, Civility, and Climate
|
| Abstract: |
Proactive behavioral intervention requires that the total staff of a school work together to meet the needs of all students. This session provides an overview of the universal behavior support interventions that should be in place in all schools. Five major categories of intervention will be included: structure for success, teacher expectations, observe/monitor, interact positively, and correct misbehavior fluently. Strategies will be included for involving the entire faculty in development and implementation of these universal strategies. (11771)

Strand C, Session 3: Tough Kid Bully Blockers: A Practical and Effective Bully Prevention/Intervention Program
|
| Abstract: |
This presentation will focus on the Tough Kid Bully Blockers, a prevention/intervention program for elementary students. The program is designed for use at the schoolwide, classroom, or small group level. The program is unique because it includes functional assessment of bullying and individual interventions for chronic bullies and victims. It includes steps to create a positive school climate by teaching skills to students through weekly lessons across the school year. Lessons are easily integrated into academic curriculum through use of literature, writing activities, and discussion. Skills include Bully Blocker Tools, Friendship Builders, Problem Solvers, Respecting Differences, and Confidence Boosters. (11772)

Strand C, Session 4: Prevention and Early Intervention in the General Education Classroom
|
| Abstract: |
This session provides an overview and 12-point checklist for determining if general classroom management practices are providing adequate support for students in the general education classroom. Then a protocol of six early stage interventions will be described that can serve as the early stage, Tier 1 practices for providing support to students with challenging behavior. These strategies include planned discussion, goal setting, data collection, increasing positive interactions, and function-based behavior improvement plans. (11773)

Strand C, Session 5: Targeted Support in Inclusion Settings for Students With EBD
|
| Abstract: |
Students identified as having emotional and/or behavioral disorders (EBD) have traditionally been served in segregated school placements. This presentation will focus on strategies that schools may initiate to support behavior education for these students in inclusion settings. Discussion will center on: individualizing the delivery of evidence-based behavior education, behavioral coaching in mainstream environments, reinforcement and correction systems congruent with inclusion, methods to move students toward increasing self-regulation and self-monitoring, and creation of a data collection system that facilitates behavior tracking and behavior analysis. Strand C, Session 6: Tier 2 Problem-Solving Processes and Evidence-Based Interventions (Individualized Behavior Plans)
|
| Abstract: |
This session delineates a structure in which general education teachers are given additional support for the design and implementation of behavior support interventions. These “second tier” problem-solving processes include problem solving based on a teacher interview, 25-minute problem-solving meetings, and more formalized functional-behavior assessment (FBA) by a multidisciplinary team. In addition, the support staff assisting the general education staff must have skill in designing and monitoring more sophisticated interventions such as structured reinforcement systems, escalation cycles, self-monitoring, and defining limits and consequences.
