Abstract: This session will identify assumptions about culture and learning, and the challenges found within the current response to intervention models. Abstract: This mock trial session will demonstrate the need for responsive instruction by introducing misconceptions about African American learners in the public school systems and how they are disproportionately placed in special education. Decision-making strategies grounded in the problem-solving inquiry model as a response to eliminating overrepresentation in special education will be demonstrated through a strengths-based approach.  (11783)

Abstract: This presentation examines the importance of family involvement and engagement. The dimensions of cultural competence with African-American families are also explored.
