Strand A, Session 3: Avoiding the “Velcro Effect”: Determining When a Student Requires Paraeducator Support
|
| Abstract: |
One of the primary mechanisms employed to support students with more significant disabilities in inclusionary settings has been the assignment of paraeducators, also referred to as "One-to-One" Assistants. Recent research into this service delivery model has highlighted the negative impact on students when an overreliance on paraeducator support exists and when the paraeducator assumes too much responsibility for the student (i.e., the “Velcro Effect”).
