Abstract: This session will address some of the current legal and ethical issues involving the employment, supervision, and training of paraeducators. Topics will focus on clarifying the appropriate role of paraeducators who assist with instruction. Criteria for developing appropriate job descriptions for paraprofessionals and teachers will be shared. This session will also address a foundation for effective teamwork and communication.  (11792)

Session: Strand A, Session 3: Avoiding the “Velcro Effect”: Determining When a Student Requires Paraeducator Support
Abstract: One of the primary mechanisms employed to support students with more significant disabilities in inclusionary settings has been the assignment of paraeducators, also referred to as "One-to-One" Assistants. Recent research into this service delivery model has highlighted the negative impact on students when an overreliance on paraeducator support exists and when the paraeducator assumes too much responsibility for the student (i.e., the “Velcro Effect”).  (11794)

Session: Strand A, Session 5: Establishing Policies and Creating Systems That Strengthen Teacher and Paraeducator Teams
Abstract: The effective use of paraeducator and teacher teams is contingent upon multiple factors. These include leadership, policy development, stakeholder involvement in the establishment of policies and personnel practices, quality professional development, funding and technical assistance, widespread dissemination, and ongoing system monitoring. These components will be discussed and participants will learn strategies to promote collaborative efforts among state and local administrators and personnel developers to build sustainable infrastructures.  (11796)
