Strand K, Session 1: Intervening Early and Effectively: Preventing and Addressing Young Children’s Challenging Behavior
|
| Abstract: |
Without effective early intervention, young children with challenging behavior are at increased risk of academic failure, expulsion, and behavior disorders. The Technical Assistance Center on Social Emotional Intervention funded by the OSEP works in partnership with the Center on the Social Emotional Foundations for Early Learning funded by Head Start and Child Care to build the capacity of early childhood programs to address challenging behavior and promote young children’s social and emotional development. Through this collaborative partnership, a unified approach for the use of evidence-based practices for promotion, prevention, and intervention is being implemented across early childhood systems including Head Start, public preschool programs, child care, and early childhood special education. Faculty will describe the model and share resources that are available for adoption including training modules, intervention resources, and the opportunity to receive assistance for statewide adoption. Strand K, Session 2: Improving Access to the General Education Curriculum Through the Modified Achievement Standard Option: What to Teach and How
|
| Abstract: |
State and national partners will discuss their efforts to implement modified academic achievement standards for a small group of students with individualized education programs ("the 2%"). This session will present innovative approaches in two states funded under OSEP GSEG grants. Topics include conceptualizing modified academic achievement standards, drafting student participation guidelines, and providing statewide training in standards-based IEP development. Participants will discuss the impact of these activities on the educational experiences of students with disabilities and implications for professional development. (11846)

Strand K, Session 3: Teachers! Administrators! University Faculty! All You Wanted to Know About Accessible Instructional Materials (AIM)
|
| Abstract: |
The 2004 amendments to IDEA included provisions that require states to ensure the timely delivery of accessible instructional materials (AIM), such as textbooks, to students who cannot effectively use print materials. States are developing systems for acquiring and disseminating AIM to students who need materials in alternate formats. The presenters will share information on how to determine if a student may need AIM; where and how to acquire AIM; how to use AIM in the classroom; and how to include content on AIM in personnel development curricula.
