STRAND L, SESSION 1: RESULTS FROM A LONGITUDINAL READING INTERVENTION STUDY WITH STUDENTS WITH INTELLECTUAL DISABILITIES (ID)
|
| Abstract: |
This session reports the findings of a study that measured reading progress across multiple school years, and determined the effectiveness of a comprehensive, research-based, direct instruction reading program in teaching early literacy skills to students with mild to moderate ID. Final data will be analyzed using hierarchical linear modeling techniques and presented. (13610)

STRAND L, SESSION 2: PREDICTORS OF RESPONSE TO PHONICS INSTRUCTION FOR CHILDREN WITH DOWN SYNDROME (DS)
|
| Abstract: |
A phonics-based approach to reading instruction is regarded as a “best practice” for most children, however its effectiveness for children with intellectual disabilities is unclear. This study explored the effectiveness of phonics-based instruction for children with DS and modeled and identified predictors of growth. This session presents the results which support inclusion of phonics-based reading instruction into academic programs for children with DS. (13611)

STRAND L, SESSION 3: EVALUATING READING INTERVENTIONS FOR STUDENTS WITH MILD INTELLECTUAL DISABILITIES
|
| Abstract: |
This session describes a project that used a multidimensional model of reading to understand the components needed by students with mild intellectual disabilities to acquire reading skills. Presenters will discuss the results including that children with mild intellectual disabilities can learn to read and benefit from instruction utilizing content and procedures similar to those used with typical children.
