Session: STRAND K, SESSION 1: EXPERIMENTAL TEACHING: AN ESSENTIAL APPROACH TO FINDING “WHAT WORKS” FOR INDIVIDUAL STUDENTS IN SPECIAL EDUCATION
Abstract: This session provides a brief historical perspective of the Experimental Teaching approach for which Curriculum-Based Measurement (CBM) was created. An overview of research across the past several decades will highlight the assumptions of the Experimental Teaching Approach. The continued need for Experimental Teaching as a method for providing responsive, data-based problem solving in an RTI framework is discussed.  (13613)

Session: STRAND K, SESSION 2: EXPERIMENTAL TEACHING: PROCEDURES FOR DEVELOPING EFFECTIVE INDIVIDUALIZED INSTRUCTION
Abstract: Placed within a response-to-intervention framework, the process of experimental teaching is illustrated with a hypothetical case study of a student who potentially has a learning disability and whose teachers evaluate and design effective instruction formatively across time and instructional settings. An overview of progress monitoring procedures in elementary reading and mathematics is provided.  (13614)

Session: STRAND K, SESSION 3: EXPERIMENTAL TEACHING: USING BRIEF EXPERIMENTAL ANALYSIS OF ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE TO PRESCRIBE INTERVENTIONS
Abstract: This session describes a process for systematic prescriptive assessment and intervention for students experiencing academic difficulties. Brief experimental analyses of academic performance are conducted to specify effective instructional strategies and the effects of subsequent intervention are demonstrated via progress monitoring probes. Applications to reading fluency with fourth to sixth graders as well as early reading skills of kindergartners will be presented.  (13615)

Session: STRAND K, SESSION 4: EXPERIMENTAL TEACHING: A COMPONENT OF THE RTI MODEL IN A LARGE, URBAN SCHOOL DISTRICT
Abstract: This session will describe the use of Curriculum-Based Measurement (CBM) within the context of RTI model implementation. Components to be presented include: CBM procedures for screening and progress monitoring from grade levels K-5, how to implement the procedures in a schoolwide setting during the academic year, criteria used for creating instructional groups and decision making for movement of students between groups, and the outcomes for students receiving Tier 2 and 3 services in the RTI model. The presentation will conclude with a discussion of the benefits and challenges facing school staff implementing experimental teaching concepts.  (13616)
